In the beginning:
Responding to an invitation from Bob Burns and Kevin Prinzing, experienced
and enthusiastic veterans from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church Habitat
project, seven Penfield churches joined together to form the first community
wide group in 1997. Not only did the group accomplish the goal of building a
Habitat for Humanity House, but their group strengthened the connection between
churches and individuals in the Penfield community. Once they got going they
couldn’t stop!
History:
The Penfield Churches Habitat Project has built 4 homes:
2004 - The Reed
family home at #215 Fulton Avenue, Rochester, NY
2001 – The McFadden
family home at #126 Rauber St., Rochester, NY
1999 – The Cherry/Hill
family home at #27 Cuba Place, Rochester, NY
1997 – The Larkins family home at #58 Hoeltzer
St., Rochester, NY
1996 – The Cherry family home on Hoeltzer St. was fully funded and volunteer
labor provided by St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. The following year St.
Joe’s invited other faith communities to participate.
The current goal of the coalition is to provide the funds ($65,000) and the volunteer labor to build a single family Habitat for Humanity home in 2007 at #52 Hoeltzer St. in Rochester. This requires many volunteers, many funding raising events, and a lot of hard work. Use the link here, or above to see all of the activities currently taking place on this project.
